Fair Work Australia Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson said that about two-thirds of the people had been underpaid $2000 last financial year.
“Typically about half of the complainants who come to us are found to have been underpaid,” he said.
Nationally, the Ombudsman recouped $26.7 million for underpaid workers, mostly due to accidental oversights by employers.
Examples also included unlawful deductions from wages and poor record-keeping.
The Ombudsman finalised 6103 complaints in total in Victoria and about half were resolved without intervention.
In Tasmania, about 1000 workers won more than $850,000 in back-pay from employers who underpaid them.
