Police are seeking public assistance following a sexual assault in Port Melbourne on Wednesday.

It’s believed a 30-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by an unknown man she had a conversation with on a tram while travelling from Box Hill to Port Melbourne.

The woman got off the tram near the Graham Street overpass in Port Melbourne, just before 8pm and has walked with the male along the cycling track running parallel with the light rail.

The male has then allegedly made threats towards the victim and pulled her into bushes where she was sexually assaulted. The male then ran off in an unknown direction.

He is described as 170cm tall with an average to medium build, receding short black hair, very white teeth, perceived to be of Mediterranean appearance with a very strong Australian accent. He was wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

The victim provided police with a face image of the alleged offender.

Police will also be setting up an information caravan at 6pm on Wednesday near the corner of Park Square and Beach Street.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit
